The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) is the apex body in India for the formulation, coordination, and promotion of biomedical research. Established in 1911, ICMR is one of the oldest and largest medical research bodies in the world. The Council is funded by the Government of India through the Department of Health Research, Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. ICMR conducts, coordinates, and implements medical research for the benefit of society, focusing on major national health priorities including communicable diseases, non-communicable diseases like cancer, diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, and mental health. The organization operates 26 permanent institutes and 6 regional medical research centers across India. ICMR's mandate includes translating medical innovations into products/processes, introducing them into the public health system, and promoting a culture of research in academia and medical colleges.
Mission
